What Is a Topographic Survey?
A topographic survey maps the elevation, contours, and physical features of a piece of land. Unlike boundary surveys that focus on property lines, topographic surveys capture the three-dimensional characteristics of the terrain—including hills, valleys, streams, trees, buildings, roads, and other natural and man-made features.
Topographic surveys are essential for site planning, engineering design, construction projects, and land development. They provide the detailed elevation data needed for drainage design, grading plans, building placement, and infrastructure planning.
At Black Mountain Surveying, we combine traditional surveying expertise with modern technology including drone mapping and GPS equipment to deliver accurate, detailed topographic surveys across Arizona.
Topographic Survey Applications
Site Planning
Comprehensive elevation data for architects and engineers to design building placements, grading, and site improvements.
Drainage Design
Elevation contours and flow patterns for stormwater management, drainage systems, and flood control planning.
Construction Prep
Detailed site information for earthwork estimation, grading plans, and construction layout preparation.
Road Design
Elevation data for road alignment, vertical curves, and intersection design for private and public roadways.
Land Development
Comprehensive terrain mapping for subdivision planning, lot layout, and community development projects.
Utility Planning
Elevation data for water, sewer, and utility line design including gravity flow considerations and trench depth planning.
Our Technology & Methods
Drone/UAV Mapping
We use drone-mounted cameras and LiDAR sensors to capture high-resolution aerial data. This technology allows us to survey large areas quickly and safely, providing detailed elevation data and orthophoto imagery.
GPS Surveying
Our RTK GPS equipment provides centimeter-level accuracy for elevation and position data. This technology is ideal for large open areas and projects requiring high precision.
Conventional Surveying
For areas where drones and GPS aren’t practical, we use total stations and levels to measure elevation points manually. This ensures complete coverage regardless of site conditions.
